In den Tiefen deiner Barmherzigkeit
I love starting the intros of my songs with a biblical story before moving into the actual worship or proclamation part. For this song, I chose the story of the woman caught in adultery from the Gospel of John. Once again, it reveals God’s grace and His kindness toward us as human beings.
I don’t know all the legal details of how things worked back then, but cases like adultery would normally be brought before a court. In most cases, both the man and the woman would be accused. But in this story, only the woman is brought to Jesus, who is teaching in the temple at the time. No man is present, and there is no proper legal process. Instead, she is publicly humiliated in front of everyone.
A woman is dragged right into the temple, straight before Jesus. No privacy, no protection, no dignity. Just stares, accusations, and pressure. And yet, right there, she is not standing before a man who is about to destroy her, but before Jesus — the One whose heart is full of compassion.
And while everyone around her is getting louder, Jesus remains calm. No rushed judgment, no harshness, no public humiliation. Instead, He responds with a wisdom that completely breaks open the situation and exposes the hearts of the accusers.
And this is where it becomes clear: the Pharisees and teachers of the law are not primarily concerned with the woman. She is just a means to an end. Their real target is Jesus Himself. They are trying to trap Him. But Jesus responds with complete authority and compassion. He sees right through their intentions and disarms them with a wisdom that is clearly not of this world.
A few things stand out:
-
Jesus does not shame the woman or publicly humiliate her.
-
At the same time, He does not downplay the situation or say, “Adultery doesn’t matter.”
-
Instead, He first turns the focus to the hearts of the accusers.
The religious leaders try to trap Him in a dilemma:
-
If He rejects the stoning, they can accuse Him of breaking the law.
-
If He agrees, He contradicts His reputation for mercy — and may even come into conflict with Roman law.
So Jesus doesn’t simply answer with “yes” or “no.” He goes deeper and brings everything to the point:
“He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.”
And this one sentence changes everything. One by one, the accusers leave. And suddenly there is silence. No crowd anymore. No noise. Just her and Jesus. And in that silence, something happens that changes everything: The woman is no longer defined by her guilt, but by her encounter with grace.
“Neither do I condemn you.”
This is the moment you understand what true mercy really is. Not the denial of truth — but the power to see sin and still give life.
“No matter how great the sin – Jesus, Your mercy is greater.”
And this is exactly where Jesus still leads people today: Not into shame, not into rejection, but into a new future.
Maybe you’re struggling with the thought that your sin is too heavy, or that you keep falling into the same patterns over and over again — and you wonder if God could really forgive you. But this is exactly the kind of person He came for.
“Moved deeply by mercy, You left Your throne behind.…”
He did not stay far away. He came to save.
And if you let Him, this promise is for you too:
Forgiveness in abundance.
Grace that carries you.
A new life that can begin right here and right now.
This song is based on the following Bible verses (WEB). Some are quoted directly, while others are paraphrased or used as the thematic foundation.
➡️ John 8:2-11
Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle, they told him, “Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What then do you say about her?” They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger. They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle. Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”
➡️ Philippians 2:6-8
Who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.
➡️ John 6:38
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
➡️ Luke 19:10
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.
➡️ 1. Timothy 1:15
The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
➡️ Romans 5:20-21
The law came in that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly, that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
➡️ Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
➡️ Micah 7:18-19
Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot. You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
➡️ Isaiah 55:7
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, to our God, for he will freely pardon.
➡️ Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
➡️ Exodus 34:6
The LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, “The LORD! The LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
➡️ John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
➡️ John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
➡️ Revelation 21:3-4
Behold, God’s dwelling is with people; and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.

Lyrics
Nein, Herr
Und seine Antwort verblüffte sie
Dann verurteile auch ich dich nicht
Geh hin und sündige nicht mehr
Von Erbarmen tief bewegt
Hast du deinen Thron verlassen
Bist aus dem Himmel herabgestiegen
Um Sünder zu suchen
All jene, die verloren sind
Oh oh oh oh
Egal wie groß die Sünde
Jesus, deine Barmherzigkeit ist größer
Oooooh, Jesus
In den Tiefen deiner Barmherzigkeit versinkt meine Schuld
Bei dir ist Vergebung in Fülle
Deine Gnade
Sie trägt mich Tag und Nacht
Oh, barmherziger Jesus
Mein König, mein Retter
Ich liebe dich
Dich allein
Oh oh oh oh oh
Egal wie groß die Sünde
Jesus, deine Barmherzigkeit ist größer
Oooooh, Jesus
In den Tiefen deiner Barmherzigkeit versinkt meine Schuld
Bei dir ist Vergebung in Fülle
Deine Gnade
Sie trägt mich Tag und Nacht
Oooh, barmherziger Jesus
Mein König, mein Retter
Ich liebe dich
Dich allein
Oh oh oh, ich bete dich an
Yeah, Jesus, dein Herz ist die Quelle der Barmherzigkeit
Wer auf dich vertraut, wird leben
Du wirst abwischen all unsere Tränen
Bei dir werden wir wohnen in Ewigkeit
Oh oh oh oh
Egal wie groß die Sünde
Jesus, deine Barmherzigkeit ist größer
Oooooooooh, Jesus
In den Tiefen deiner Barmherzigkeit versinkt meine Schuld
Bei dir ist Vergebung in Fülle
Deine Gnade
Sie trägt mich Tag und Nacht
Oooooh, barmherziger Jesus
Mein König, mein Retter
Ich liebe dich
Dich allein
Oh oh oh, ich bete dich an
Oh oh oh oh
Oh, barmherziger Jesus
Mein König, mein Retter
Ich liebe dich
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
