What Is Truth?

Pilate wasn’t the only one who ever asked this question. I think just about everyone has asked themselves this question at least once in their life.

Let’s begin with a different question: What is truth NOT?

Truth is not what we feel, what we want, what we assume, or what we collectively decide. It does not depend on our personal perspective or on the opinion of the majority. Truth is not simply knowledge, nor is it merely a collection of individual facts. Truth is not something we create for ourselves. Truth is what is actually true - regardless of whether we recognize it, accept it, or reject it.

So the most important question is not, “What do I want to believe is true?” but, “What has God said?”

And this is where things already get interesting right at the very beginning of the Bible. In Genesis 3, we encounter the first great question about truth. God had told the human being not to eat from a particular tree. His command was clear. But then the serpent comes along and calls it into question: “Has God really said…?” (Genesis 3:1)

Notice how the temptation begins: with a question about what God had said. The serpent doesn’t simply come right out and say, “God is lying.” It starts more subtly. It plants doubt. It twists God’s words and calls His statement into question. And in the end, the human being chooses to believe another voice more than God.

That is remarkable, because the story of sin doesn’t simply begin with a forbidden fruit. It begins with a decision about which voice to believe. God had said, “You must not eat from it.” The serpent questioned God’s word. And the human being ultimately believed the lie.

The very first sin was therefore directly connected to truth and lies.

Perhaps that is also why the question of truth remains so important today. We hear countless voices every day. People tell us what is right and wrong. Our feelings tell us what feels right. Society tells us what we should believe. Science, philosophy, religion, and politics offer different answers to life’s biggest questions. And sometimes even we tell ourselves things we desperately want to believe.

But which of these voices actually reflects the truth? And how can we know? If truth really is what is true regardless of our opinion, then it is not enough simply to say, “That’s what I believe.” The much more important question is, “Why do I believe it?” And even more importantly: “Have I actually examined whether it is true?”

That is exactly what this song is about. It is not about forcing an opinion on you. It is not about telling you, “Believe me because I say so.” It is about encouraging you to ask questions.

Search. Examine. Question. Read it for yourself.

Because if something is truly true, it should have nothing to fear from honest questions. A truth that can only survive as long as nobody questions it is not a truth I want to blindly accept.

The truth has nothing to hide.
It does not have to run from questions.
It has nothing to fear from being examined.
It does not need to manipulate.
It does not have to prove itself by having as many people as possible believe it.

If something is true, it remains true - even if no one believes it. And if something is false, it does not become true simply because millions of people believe it. That is why I don’t simply want to ask you through this song, “Do you believe in God?” I want to ask you something much more fundamental: Whatever you believe in - are you sure it is actually the truth?

But what is truth?

Now that we know what truth is not, let’s return to the actual question: What is truth? The Bible doesn’t give us just one answer. It tells us about a God who is truth. It says: “Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

And then we encounter Jesus. When Pilate questions Him and speaks about truth, Jesus says: “For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth.” (John 18:37) Jesus did not simply come into the world to give people a new religion. He came to testify to the truth.

But what truth?

The truth about who God is.
The truth about who we are.
The truth about what has happened to us.
The truth about sin and guilt.
The truth about death and judgment.
The truth about why we are separated from God.

And finally, the truth about how we can be reconciled to God. Because if we simply say, “Jesus is the truth,” we have said something true - but we have not even begun to tell the whole story.

The question is: Why did truth have to come into this world at all?

To understand that, we have to go all the way back to the beginning. In the beginning, there was no separation between God and humanity. God did not create human beings to live somewhere far away from Him. He created them in His image, according to His likeness. Then God said: “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Genesis 1:26)

Human beings were therefore something very special in God’s creation. They were not simply meant to exist, but to live in relationship with their Creator. In Genesis 2 and 3, we find humanity in the Garden of Eden. And there we encounter something that may be difficult for us to imagine today: God and humanity were in direct relationship with one another. After the fall, we read: “They heard God’s voice walking in the garden in the cool of the day…” (Genesis 3:8). The text describes a tangible, perceivable presence of God. Adam and Eve hear Him. But this time, something has changed: they hide.

Why?

Because something had happened that changed their relationship with God. They no longer believed God. They believed another voice. The lie had led them away from the truth. And with that, sin entered the world.

Sin is about much more than simply “doing something wrong.” It begins with humanity becoming separated from God - with the desire to decide for ourselves what is good and evil instead of trusting God. Human beings no longer wanted to trust that God’s word was true. And the consequences were devastating: shame, fear, hiding, separation, and ultimately death. God had warned the human being: “…for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:17) And here again we see something crucial about truth: God’s word proved to be true. The serpent had said: “You won’t really die!” (Genesis 3:4)

But who had spoken the truth? God. The first lie promised freedom, knowledge, and independence. What it actually brought was separation from God and death. And perhaps this is one of the most important questions we should still be asking ourselves today: Which voice are we listening to?

The lie does not always come right out and say, “God does not exist.” Sometimes all it takes is: “Did God really mean it that way?” Or: “It can’t really be that bad.” Or: “Everyone has to find their own truth.” Or: “You don’t need God. You can decide for yourself what is right and wrong.” That is why the question is not only, “What do I believe?” but also, “What is the basis for what I believe?”

But God did not leave humanity alone.

And this is where the story of the Bible becomes truly incredible. Even though humanity turned its back on God, God did not turn His back on humanity. Immediately after the fall, God begins to search for the human being: “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9)

Of course, God already knew where Adam was. The question was not meant to give God information. God was seeking the human being. The human being hid. God searched for him. Humanity had turned away from God. God took the first step toward him. And so a story begins that runs throughout the entire Bible.

God seeks humanity. He calls Abraham. He chooses Israel. He speaks through the prophets. He gives His word and repeatedly shows people who He is and what He desires from them. And finally, God does something that surpasses everything that came before: He comes into this world Himself. Not hidden. Not as a riddle. Not as a mere idea. But as a human being. John writes: “The Word became flesh and lived among us.” (John 1:14) And suddenly we understand Jesus’ words: “He who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9)

Jesus came to show us the very nature of God. He spoke God’s words, did God’s works, revealed God’s character, healed, forgave, loved, warned, and called people to repentance. And He said: “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) Jesus therefore did not come merely to talk about truth. He came to make the truth visible. And that is exactly why this line from my song is so important:

“God’s Son came into this world
And lived right here among us
He showed us the very nature of God
Spoke His words, did His works.”

But Jesus did not come only to show us what God is like. He also came to do what we could never do for ourselves. Because if humanity’s real problem is sin and separation from God, then it is not enough simply to explain the truth to us. We need saving.

And this is where we come to the heart of the Gospel. Jesus says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.“ (John 3:16)

God did not want to leave humanity in separation from Him. He loved us. And that is why Jesus came. Not because sin doesn’t matter, but precisely because sin matters so much. Not because God could simply say, “Forget about it.” But because justice and love had to meet. Jesus took the consequence of sin upon Himself. He died on the cross. And there, something happens that we should never separate from the truth: The truth about our guilt meets the love of God.

Now I want to ask you something very personally:

If the truth were to actually stand before you - would you recognize it, even if it were uncomfortable? And would you believe it, even if it cost you something?
