Not Of This World

Lyrics   |   Scripture

One day, as I was reading my Bible like I so often do, a verse caught my attention in a completely new way:

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:13

I don’t know how many times I had read this verse before. But that day, it suddenly felt incredibly alive. It was as if it were speaking directly to me. And immediately, I felt this deep desire to turn it into my next song. And what story could possibly fit this verse better than the story of the repentant criminal who hung on the cross beside Jesus?

I have to admit, I really struggled with writing the intro. At first, I wrote it from Jesus’ perspective. But somehow, it just didn’t feel right to me. So I rewrote the entire thing and told the story from the perspective of the repentant criminal instead. And from that intro, the actual song eventually came to life.

But let’s begin with something Jesus said on the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” That statement is incredibly powerful. Because if we’re honest, that kind of response is anything but human. It literally comes from another world. It is divine.

Just consider everything Jesus had already endured by that point:

Gethsemane: Jesus experiences deep anguish and inner pain because He knows what lies ahead. He prays in such agony that His sweat falls to the ground like drops of blood (Luke 22:44).

Judas’ betrayal: One of His closest companions betrays Him with a kiss and hands Him over to His enemies.

The arrest: Although Jesus is innocent, He is arrested and treated like a dangerous criminal.

Being abandoned: His disciples flee in fear. Peter, one of His closest companions, denies Him three times.

False accusations and an unjust verdict: People bring false witnesses against Him. Although He is innocent, He is condemned.

Mockery, beatings, and humiliation: Jesus is mocked, spit on, beaten, and humiliated. People even ridicule His identity as the Son of God.

The scourging: Roman soldiers whip Jesus. A Roman scourge was not an ordinary leather whip, but a brutal instrument of torture with multiple straps, often fitted with pieces of bone or metal. The blows tore open the skin and caused severe injuries. Jesus endures immense physical pain and further humiliation—even though He is completely innocent.

The crown of thorns: They place a crown of thorns on His head, put a robe on Him, and mock Him as the “King of the Jews.”

The road to Golgotha: After the scourging, the beatings, and a night without rest, Jesus is physically exhausted. Yet He is forced to walk to the place of execution outside the city and carry His cross. Every step brings more pain. His wounds, exhaustion, and blood loss make it increasingly difficult to continue. When He can no longer carry the weight, the soldiers force Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross for Him. Jesus continues on to Golgotha - the place where He is going to die.

The crucifixion: When Jesus arrives at Golgotha, He is nailed to the cross. His hands and feet are pierced before the cross is raised. There He hangs in unimaginable pain. Every breath becomes agony. Above Him, a sign is placed that reads, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” He is crucified between two criminals while the people continue to mock and ridicule Him. They challenge Him to save Himself if He truly is the Son of God.

But Jesus does not respond with hatred. Not with curses. Not with revenge. He prays for the very people who are doing all of this to Him:

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Luke 23:34

In the midst of His own unimaginable suffering, Jesus shows forgiveness and love. Personally, these words move me so deeply that they bring tears to my eyes.

The Bible doesn’t tell us how the two criminals beside Jesus reacted to those words. But I can imagine that what He said must have caught them completely off guard. Perhaps His words were met with hatred and disbelief by one of them. But perhaps they went straight to the heart of the other. Because something happened to this man. Something changed within him. He recognized who was hanging beside him: Christ. The King. A King whose kingdom is not of this world.

What exactly caused him to change his mind, we don’t know. The Bible doesn’t tell us. But we do know that his attitude changed. He recognized his own guilt. He even said it out loud, acknowledging that he had been justly condemned. And then he gathered all his courage. He turned to Jesus - the man he himself had previously mocked - and humbly asked Him to remember him when He came into His kingdom.

He had nothing to offer. He could no longer change his past or make right what he had done. There was nothing he could do to cancel out his guilt or earn his salvation. But that was exactly the point—he didn’t have to. He turned to Jesus with his guilt and placed all his hope in Him. He called on Him. And Jesus -rich in grace and mercy - answered him: “Today you will be with Me in paradise.”

The repentant criminal made the most important and best decision of his life. Jesus gave him eternal life. And Jesus has the authority to do that, because He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. Jesus was sent by God into this world to seek and save the lost. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. He lived without sin. He was perfect and without guilt. And on the cross, He took our sins upon Himself so that we could have eternal life through Him.

It is almost impossible to imagine everything He had to endure for us. Giving your life for others would already be an incredible sacrifice. But to give your life under such horrific circumstances - for people who rejected, mocked, and hurt you - is something else entirely.

And that is why I want to ask you something: Do you know Jesus? And if not, what is holding you back?

The repentant criminal recognized that the man hanging beside him was the King of a kingdom that is not of this world. He recognized in Him the way, the truth, and the life. He recognized his own guilt and knew that he could not save himself. There was nothing he could do to earn his salvation—not through any deed, any achievement, or even the best of good works. All he could do was turn to Jesus in faith and trust in His grace. And Jesus saved him.

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

If Jesus really is who He says He is . . .

. . . wouldn’t you want to take the chance and call on Him?

This song is based on the following Bible verses (WEB). Some are quoted directly, while others are paraphrased or used as the thematic foundation.

Luke 23:32–43

There were also others, two criminals, led with him to be put to death.  When they came to the place that is called “The Skull”, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.  Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.  The people stood watching. The rulers with them also scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” An inscription was also written over him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!” But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Don’t you even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Mark 15:31-32

Likewise, also the chief priests mocking among themselves with the scribes said, “He saved others. He can’t save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him.” Those who were crucified with him also insulted him.

Isaiah 52:14-15

Just as many were astonished at you - his appearance was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men - so he will cleanse many nations.
Kings will shut their mouths at him; for they will see that which had not been told them, and they will understand that which they had not heard.

Isaiah 53:3–5

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him. Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

John 18:36–37

Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.” Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

John 1:11

He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.

John 3:19

He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only born Son of God. This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Romans 10:9–13

That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Luke 6:35–36

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. “Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.

Psalm 103:8

Yahweh is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.

1. John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

John 8:12

Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 1:4-5

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.

Lyrics

He cursed himself so deeply and the world around him even more

How had he ended up here, on this hill of death

Pain tore through his body with unbearable force

And made every breath sheer torture

He searched for a way out

But he knew he would die here

And two others with him

But one of them seemed innocent

It was the Man beside him

Beaten beyond recognition, barely looking human anymore

Yet no hatred filled His heart, no curse crossed His lips

Instead, He prayed

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing

Words so strange, as if they came from another world

He fell silent and wondered

Whether this Man really was who He claimed to be

A King and His Kingdom not of this world

Suddenly, remorse for his deeds washed over him

He knew his sentence was just

But the Man beside him, He was innocent

He had despised Him and mocked Him, just like everyone else

But now he was ashamed of it

He found the courage, turned to Him and asked

Lord, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom

With great effort He lifted His head and answered him with compassion

Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise

Jesus came into this world

To serve people

And to give His life

As a ransom for many

His final decision

Was the most important of his life

And opened the door to eternal life for him

What about you

If Jesus really is who He says He is

What's holding you back

Oooooh, it's really true

Whoever trusts in Jesus

And believes in Him

He will save

Oh oh oh, not of this world

A King who forgives

And loves His enemies

Oooooh, His love

Unconditional

Jesus came to His own

But His own did not receive Him

Because they loved the darkness

Far more than the Light

His final decision

Was the most important of his life

And gave him eternal life

Tell me, what about you

Have you made your decision yet

Won't you take the step

Oooooh, it's really true

Whoever trusts in Jesus

And believes in Him

He will save

Oh oh oh, not of this world

A King who forgives

And loves His enemies

Oooooh, His love

Unconditional

He is merciful and gracious

Gentle and abounding in patience

If we confess our sins

He is faithful and just

And forgives our sins

He recognized the King

Not of this world

And in Him the Way

The Truth

And the Life

Oooooh, it's really true

Whoever trusts in Jesus

And believes in Him

He will save

Oh oh oh, not of this world

A King who forgives

And loves His enemies

Oooooh, His love

Unconditional

He made the best decision of his life

And Jesus gave him eternal life

But what about you

Salvation stands before you

Won't you take hold of it

Oh oh oh oooooh oooh

Not of this world
